TechTalk: Reimagining Safety, Health and Environment using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)

While Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) has seen wide-spread adoption in academia, application in the food, agri- and aqua- industry is limited. GENESEQ Sdn Bhd is a pioneer in this field, and they harness the power of NGS to assess food safety issues, authenticate food products, and monitor health of farmed animals.

In light of the COVID19 pandemic, GENESEQ have also collaborated with universities to uncover the DNA sequence of SARS-CoV-2 genome. In the context of food safety, the use of NGS has facilitated the identification of all the animal and plant species, and bacterial populations within a processed food sample. With this information at hand, food operators will have the ability to be preventive rather than reactive in their food safety programs.

In the context of aquaculture, GENESEQ was able to analyse changes in the bacterial composition of an animal’s gut during a treatment regime. This talk outlines how NGS works, and its application in the food, agri- and aqua- sectors. Some interesting findings using this method will also be highlighted in this talk. In the context of aquaculture, GENESEQ was able to analyse changes in the bacterial composition of an animal’s gut during a treatment regime.
